For the purpose of this essay we shall analyse the events in â€Å"Battle Royal† in an effort to identify parallels which exist between present day society and that of the protagonist’s society in â€Å"Battle Royal†. The chapter is an account of inequality and racial injustices in a small town down south in the post -colonial era, where segregation was alive. It begins with the protagonist narrating a childhood memory of his grandfather’s death and his final words in passing. The grandfather had admonished the protagonist’s parents to teach him and the other young ones to be a traitor as he, the grandfather had been, so he can get ahead in a white society. These were appalling words to the family and the children, including the narrator had been rushed from the room. The boy grew, always thinking the grandfather had imparted a curse and spent his life trying to escape the clutches of the curse, for who would want to be known as a traitorous coward? The parallels which exist between our society and that of the story are embedded in the symbolism that Ellison employed as a tool in his treatment of the issues of the black society in the 1950s. The story is rife with symbolism for issues which may easily be identified in modern day society. First we see the dying grandfather and his last words, symbolic of the hopes and dreams of ancestors passed on to the next generation. He has little else left to leave behind as a legacy, all he has is his wisdom. We see a confused black boy, symbolic of much of the black society, wandering aimlessly as they haven’t a true sense of who they were before slavery and they struggle to figure out how to begin to carve out a place in this world. The gathering at the Battle Royal, comprising of the most influential and affluent whites in the society represents the hierarchy that governs the system we live under. It also represents black perception of opportunities for a seat at the table or at the very least, crumbs from the table; a chance to win the approval of whites for social and economic advancement. Such opportunities are often used as a lure, they keep blacks hopeful, paint a picture of all we could accomplish but beneath the surface can be the trap that leads to destruction. The white stripper represents the fantasies of blacks, something that is often not attainable; something that would often serve as a source of embarrassment to us if they were to be known, yet they make us vulnerable. The animosity the nine boys have towards the main character symbolizes the helplessness and frustration of the black community (Blake, p.122). The protagonist represents to the boys, a constant reminder of the scourge of their lowly estate as slaves, the physical and sexual exploitation that had to have occurred to make his existence possible, for he was a ginger coloured boy, indicative of lighter complexion which is testament to a black ancestor being raped by a white master. He was tainted by this for it made him appear to be a house nigger as opposed to darker hued boys who would have been regarded as field niggers. This mentality is prolonged in present day society as colorism is an issue among blacks, who feel that the lighter skinned blacks have better odds as they may have lighter skin tones and finer hair textures that may afford them more opportunities than darkies. This frustration feeds into the symbol of the blindfolded fight serving as blacks being played against each other. We lash out, not knowing why we are fighting against each other, not recognizing that the differences in each other that we pick at make no difference to whites, who still see us all as blacks. We are conditioned to adopt the philosophy of every man for himself. In essence we forsake the principle of community and abandon team work. It sets us up for the money rug, which is symbolic of the whites dangling the proverbial carrot, a part of a sordid game that further divides us and allows them the upper hand. It relegates us to a position of grovelling, total degradation. It represents the economic struggles of blacks , who must bear unspeakable humiliation and undergo excruciating pain and sacrifice to make a dollar. Finally, the note in the main character’s dream symbolizes the ever shifting goal post; the reality that the rules of the game will always keep changing. Ellison uses the Battle Royal as a ritual rooted in slavery in which both sides accept their status and assumes their role (â€Å"Art† p. 175) Other writers used some variation of the Battle royal in their stories as it appears to have been a fixture of slavery in which slave owners pitted their strongest slaves against their neighbor’s with the plantation as the ultimate stake. In order to understand the underbelly of the basis of the symbolism in the grandfather’s statement on his death bed, one must know the differences between the Sambo and John characters in African American folklore. Sambo represents the docile, subservient slave who accepts degradation while John represents the unbroken defiant slave who continually defies master. The parting words of the protagonist’s grandfather serve as nuggets of wisdom for though youth and pride would have many aspiring to be a John, for longevity sake it would serve him better to be a Sambo or Samfie; for though this appears to be Sambo’s nature, it is his greatest source of power. We see the protagonist rejecting the Sambo nature out of pride. This is still the attitude of many blacks today, for they cannot see how playing Sambo will benefit them and think it further extends the white man’s narrative, that they can be no more than grovelling idiots who suck up and worship the ground that whites walk on. They refuse to accept the grandfather’s philosophy that it can be harnessed and used as a tool that can pacify the whites to some degree and help blacks to eke out a living for themselves. By virtue of the staunch opposition to the Sambo stereotype, some blacks are regarded as traitors because they choose the path of least resistance to survive a prejudicial society. Those who would try to walk the path of Sambo are called coons, Massa’s boy as a label that shows disdain for their decision to travel the path of least resistance; an indictment that they have somehow sold out the black race or relinquished their black card. This may result in alienation, as both whites and blacks reject such a one.By the end of the chapter the grandfather’s words take on new meaning for he only wished to let the next generation know that to get ahead blacks must outsmart the white man by playing the white man’s game of black subservience, but know at all times that you won’t win on their terms. Now most would ask why would you embark on such a hike? The girls took part on this journey because they didnt want to be kept in the Moore River Mission Station. Supposedly, for their own good, the three girls had been stolen from their mothers, forcibly removed from their home at Jigalong and taken to this Mission Station, run by white Australians, whose sole purpose, according to official policy, was to educate Aborigines so that they could grow up fitting in with white society. This ignorant abuse of the indigenous rights policy that led to the forcible removal of Aboriginal children from their homes back in 1931 was still practiced until it was reconsidered and changed only in 1971. But has anything really changed today? Mr.Peter Howson, Minister for Aboriginal affairs in 1971 and 72, and Des Moore, Director of the Institute of Private Enterprises, not only believe that in society we arent ignorant about our indigenous people, but also believe we never were. An article written in The Australian in 2002, explains that the movie Rabbit Proof Fence, although claimed to be a true story, may have been a distortion of the facts. As the first half-castes born in their remote community, the rabbit proof fence girls were subjected to the kind of insults and abuse not uncommonly handed out to half-castes in traditional communities. Throughout the film, the directors have obviously made some clear silences in order to persuade the viewer to see the Aborigines side of the story. However there is always two sides to a story. Little did most people know that Aboriginal Chief Protector Mr. A. O. Neville was actually working under a State Government policy stressing the importance of the protection of all neglected children, including special protective arrangements for Aborigines. Also after his death, his mother received approximately 500 letters from Aborigines thanking him for his efforts on their behalf. Another act that was silenced from the film. As seen in Rabbit Proof Fence and although patronised by many Aborigines, society in general sees them as people who are in need of help. Backing this up are words from former Prime Minister of Australia Paul Keating. we cannot confidently say that we have succeeded as we would like to have succeeded if we have not managed to extend opportunity and care, dignity and hope to the indigenous people of Australia 2 One listening to this would make the clear assumption that there seems to be a distinct divide in the Australian people, saying it is up to us (white Australia) to help the indigenous population. Rabbit Proof Fence is a film that silences many things, particularly the white-Australian logic behind the in-place policy to make the villain the leader of the whites, Mr. Neville. Meanwhile the aborigines in the film, are portrayed as the victims who are trying to escape. An acclaimed Aboriginal Rights Activist Noel Pearson, mentioned something that truly backs up the films view. Pearson said that Aborigines who want equal rights and opportunities also need to develop a stronger sense of responsibility and that aboriginal leaders should, stop depicting their people as victims. 3 Pearson also states that welfare, or money for nothing, often has more detrimental effects on Aboriginal communities, than it has benefits. The local pub in the Curtain Springs community in Alice Springs has imposed an alcohol ban for aborigines and this has caused a lot of commotion. Upon first sight of the pub, many visitors see this as an outright sign of discrimination. However, it was the 300 Aboriginal women of the area who in 1990 marched into the pub demanding the ban be set in place. 4 After seeing this, the white visitors feel it is their need to take it on personally and some supply alcohol to the local Aborigines. The social representation of Aborigines as victims makes it very hard for people to understand the reasoning behind this alcohol ban. Unfortunately when this occurs, as a result heavy drinking and acts of violence take place. One could perhaps conclude that when white people interfere and try to help indigenous communities, they only cause more problems. In many interviews and public addresses, the Prime Minister John Howard, has been put under pressure to deliver an official apology to Aborigines for the stolen generation problem. This is an example of the lack of apology and want of reconciliation by white Australia and particularly the Government that provokes this problem of societys representation and victimisation of Aboriginals. Should he apologise on behalf of the Australian Government, the problem faced by the Prime Minister is the legal litigation that he could incur. His stance on the subject is simple however, and somewhat different to that of his predecessor. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had been one of the most prolific musicians of all times. Mozart was the son of Leopold and Anna Maria Mozart and he was born in Salzburg Austria. At the young age of four Mozart already showed his prowess in music and it is in this regard that his father, Leopold (also a renowned musician) had been so proud of him and did everything in his power to expose Mozart into the musical field. (Moss, 2007). Mozart had been a great success in the field of music and tons of people admired his prowess in composing music as well as on his ability to master many musical instruments. It is in this regard that at the age of fifteen Mozart earned a post in the orchestra that works for the Archbishop of Salzburg. However things did not work well between the Archbishop and Mozart and thus Mozart was kicked from his position and left the archbishop’s premises even though it is against his father’s wishes. Mozart had also been a success in Vienna even after he had grown up. However, life did not bode well with Mozart in spite of all his successes in his musical career. Poverty had been one of Mozart’s constant companions during most of his life especially since he do not know how to manage his money well and also according to his mother he would give almost all of his money to his friends if one would only let him be. (Chew, 2007) In spite of Mozart’s brilliance in the field of music he was snubbed in the court of England. Thus, he went to Manheim wherein he met and fell in love with Aloysia Weber. However, life had not been kind to him as his mother died in Paris and he was also rejected by Aloysia. (Microsoft Encarta, 2001). However, even though he lost his job in the Archbishop’s place he still continued living in Vienna. And from there in the year of 1782, he composed the Abduction from the Seraglio which had been a great success. Following that, he married the sister of Aloysia, Constanze. However, poverty did not make their lives any easier and it made it even harder by Mozart’s constant illnesses. Poverty greatly affected Mozart’s life as well as musical career. It is due to poverty and through lack of patronage that his music for the years to follow had not been very popular and consistent. It is in this regard that Mozart was forced to rely on the kindness of his friends in order to continue to survive. Mozart returned to his teaching careers since income from his performance had not been very steady. Poverty even forced him to stop performing and thus he spent most of his time writing compositions. However, in spite of his many compositions money still did not trudge their way. It is hard to believe that after living a life of extravagance and luxury Mozart died in illness and poverty. One of the primary reasons why Mozart’s music ceased to be a success in Vienna is the fact that people found his music too complex and thus in his latter life of poverty Mozart adapted simplicity on to his music making Vienna love his music once more. However, Mozart still died at the early age of 35 and he died full of debts and still living a life of poverty. It was said that Mozart was buried in an unmarked grave. Mozart’s influenced reached musicians such as Haydn, Schubert, and Strauss. (Encyclopedia Brittanica). Basically, poverty greatly affected Mozart’s life. Used to living an extravagant life he was reduced to a life almost similar to that of a pauper. Due to poverty Mozart was forced to stop doing the thing he most wants to do (performing in public). However, Mozart did not let poverty rob him of the right to compose music and thus in spite of his poor life he still managed to compose a lot of musical items. Although poverty made Mozart and his family’s life hard, it still did not lessened Mozart’s genius in terms of music and thus he still went on writing music that is nice on the ears and he even remedied the one flaw Vienna public found on his music (his music being too complex for the people of Vienna).
